More than 100 prospective students converged on Eastern Mennonite University last weekend - an inaugural Scholarship Weekend coupled with the traditional annual Honors Weekend. Current honors students were insturemental in the organization and success of the weekend events.

Eastern Mennonite University junior and entrepreneur Andrea Cable has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship in Insureon's Small Business, Big Impact essay contest.

Seminary commuter students who travel more than an hour each way to attend seminary classes this semester are doing so for various reasons - the emphasis on personal formation, small class sizes, the relationships created, and the diversity of beliefs represented.

Eastern Mennonite University spring 2017 production of 'The 39 Steps' has been selected for presentation at a regional event of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The seven-character cast, which received a Certificate of Merit for Ensemble Acting from the KCACTF in spring 2017, also earned nominations for the KCACTF's Irene Ryan Acting competition and stage manager competition.

Students were honored for leadership, service, academic work, and athletic success at the Fall Recognition Chapel on December 8, 2017.

The "Story Exhibition," hosted by EMU's DACA Dialogue Planning Committee, was a way to raise awareness on campus about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and highlighted a current EMU student, an EMU alumnus, four students in the Harrisonburg community, and five others from around the nation.

Audiences laughed, reflected, celebrated and sang at the performances of "What we bring. What we take. What we leave." during Eastern Mennonite University's Centennial Homecoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 13-15, 2017. The production, commissioned by EMU's Centennial Committee and sponsored by Everence Financial, was a collage of stories of the experience of being a student at EMU written by Ingrid DeSanctis '88 and Ted Swartz '89, MACL '92.

The Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team raised more than $1,200 to purchase 40 "Sweet Cases" for foster children through the nonprofit organization Together We Rise. They decorated the duffel bags, filled them with items, and returned them to the organization for dispersal. The project had special meaning for top fundraiser Bri Miller, who is adopted.

During its fall concert, the Eastern Mennonite University Jazz Ensemble will play swing, up-tempo funk, two Benny Carter pieces and more. The 16-member ensemble under the direction of Robert Curry will take the stage in Lehman Auditorium at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Valerie Showalter, a graduate student at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, addressed 450 donors at the annual Donor Appreciation Banquet during Centennial Homecoming and Family Weekend.

Eastern Mennonite University's fall production of "Macbeth" included all the brutal struggles and Shakespearean language of the classic tale...with a twist. Set in a contemporary women's prison, the all-female cast of characters must struggle against the harsh realities of the environment and through the tragic conflicts to survive.

Cerrie Mendoza, a biology major from El Paso, Texas, is taking part in a collaboration pilot project between the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), the U. S. Geological Survey, Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) and James Madison University (JMU) to gather genetic samples from certain North American species of salamanders that were first collected and described 50 years ago. The project is funded by the Smithsonian's Global Genome Initiative.

Eastern Mennonite University's Latino Student Alliance hosted a Sept. 15 chapel to begin Latino Heritage Month. Guest speaker Don Clymer, an EMU language professor who has led several cross-cultural trips to Central and South America, shared on the theme of "Donde Caben Dos, Caben Tres," a common Hispanic saying which translates as "there is always room for one more."

Building on water quality research of three Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) professors, recent graduate Hannah Daley and senior Amanda Williams concluded a summer of data collection in the Bergton area watershed. With funding from the first EMU Summer Research Grant, the partners are investigating the relationship between canopy cover and stream water temperature in two headwater streams.

Students explored 16th Century Radical Anabaptism in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany with a focus on the crosscurrents of gender and class that shaped the movement The cross-cultural trip was one of five offered this summer by Eastern Mennonite University, which has required some form of cross-cultural study for more than 30 years. The trip began with the traditional dipping of back tires in the Atlantic Ocean at Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. It ended 59 days later in the Pacific at Lincoln City, Oregon, after 3,492 miles across 14 states and through Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Goshen, Indiana; Yellowstone National Park, and Portland, Oregon.

Navigating spiritual and personal growth, pastoral roles, early mornings, late nights, and much more, Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) students are spending 11 weeks this summer exploring the ministry profession through the Ministry Inquiry Program (MIP).

Senior Tyler Denlinger (Perkasie, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) has wrapped up his collegiate career with one more award, this time being named All-Academic by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Thirteen students in Eastern Mennonite University's Washington Community Scholars' Center (WCSC) experienced on-the-job learning this summer. At the heart of the WCSC program are professional internships in a variety of settings where students make positive contributions to the community and gain vocational direction. But students also get to experience city life, explore Washington's cultural and historic attractions, learn about issues such as gentrification, and manage a house budget and relationships in the communal living environment of the Nelson Good House.
